John McCain had said that there were times in his captivity during his time as a soldier when he was happy, those in camps during the Holocaust have said they had peace and we know of stories of those who found ways to celebrate Shabbat and the High Holy Days. We can see in life people who are going through a terminal illness or have suffered the loss of a child or spouse who have a peace about them, who are moving through the pain etc.. in a way that can leave people in awe. What does that tell us? It tells us that this is a very wise quote.
The situation we are in may not get resolved right away, so really the only control we have is our attitude in amy given moment and since thoughts create emotions and emotions can determine how focused and disciplined we are in our actions and reactions, well, we might want to step back, take control of our thoughts, readjust our attitude and this way we can find a constructive solution to the problem, the current negative situation. We may not have control over other people, the storm we are caught up in, but we do have control over how we act and react in regards to it. I have Fibromyalgia and my fatigue has been getting worse, now I may not have control over the fact that I have Fibromyalgia, but I do have control over how I take care of myself, how I deal with it on a day to day basis, whether I let it run my life, so that I have no life, or I take control so that I have some kind of a life, and so that I don’t live my life bitter, angry about it. That I do have a choice about and control over. My attitude is my choice, not anyone else’s. I meditate regularly, take walks almost every day, do stretch exercises, participate in healing circles regularly, do what I can to keep positive and have a life that is one at peace with myself and with what is going on around me. Again, that is my choice, Life is about choice, constructive, or destructive, and it all originates with thought. We have to be aware that our thoughts have a great deal to do with life and so do our expectations, which should be realistic, but also positive, in that we will find the right solution, or the situation will resolve as is best for all, ourselves included, in the long run. That doesn’t mean we sit passively and do nothing, but if our attitude is pessimistic, gloom and doom then the actions I take will reflect that, so attitude matters, even in terms of what actions I take to address a problem or deal with a situation. We should also be able to flow with the tide, be flexible as to where the tide takes us, so that if we have a career goal or personal one, a dream we want to accomplish, we are not rigid, so rigid we get sick insisting on thing having to be a certain way or go in a certain direction. Part of attitude is flexibility, and that’s important to remember as well.
Remember, we may not have chosen the circumstances we were thrown into, or we may have taken a wrong that put us in muddy waters, but whether we get out those muddy waters unscathed or at all or even with minimal bruising is in part up to us and our attitude.
